1# The best neighbourhoods for students in Buenos Aires

July 3, 2008 · 3 Comments

Buenos Aires is a vast city. The whole of the agglomaration has some 13 million people, so as a foreign student how to make your pick on where to live in this huge metropolis? This posts hopes to help you with that.

First of all, the distinction must be made between Buenos Aires the Federal Capital and Buenos Aires ‘the province’ both of which make up for the total agglomaration. The first is the capital of Argentina. It contains the historical center, the presidential working palace (the casa rosada) and a large number of important institutions. The full name is ‘Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires’. It is an autonomous city which means it does not fall under any federal state (as Argentina is a Federal Republic) and has its own government. The second is the part of the agglomeration which lies outside of Capital Federal. This is the part of the agglomeration which lies in the Province of Buenos Aires (the province of Buenos Aires being one of the federal states of which Argentina is composed). Locals refer to the first as ‘Capital’ and to the second as ‘La provincia’. Just that you know! Some 2 million people live in Capital and the remainder 11 million therefore live in La provincia. So now the first big question is whether you would want to live in capital or provincia? Well, as a foreign student that choice is not really that hard to make. Where the province certainly may have its own local charm of its own (San Isidro, Tigre) and maybe even some institutions geared towards foreign people, the real action takes place in la Capital. This is the beating heart of the country, financially, economically, culturally and politically. Here live goes on 24/24, is where the best Universities are, the best restaurants, bars, etc. So unless there is a very compelling reason for you to do otherwise, we would definitely recommend you to look for housing in Capital!
