In the footsteps of Diego Maradona: on tour with Casa34

Regardless whether you are a football lover or a football hater, everyone has heard of Diego Maradona as one of the greatest football players the ‘beautiful game’ has ever produced. Also, most people know that he is an Argentinian and probably the most (in)famous inhabitant of this proud country. But how many people know that Diego grew up in the slumps of Villa Fiorito, just outside of the city of Buenos Aires, that he was discovered by the scouts of first division team Argentinos Juniors at the age of 9 and that he made his debute in the Argentinan selection at the age of 16 at a home match against Hungary in ‘La Bombonera’? Well whether you know these things or not is not important. Whether you are a Maradona fanatic, or just curious about his footsteps in Buenos Aires: you will definitely like the Maradona Footstep Tour that Casa34 will start organizing starting September 2008. Interested? Please read on!

The Maradona Footstep Tour will take you along the different landmarks of Diego’s life in Buenos Aires. First of all, we will start in Villa Fiorito, where we will take a tour through the slumps in which he grew up. Be prepared, this is not like Palermo…. You will get a good understanding of the miserable conditions under which ‘el pibe de Oro’ grew up (and which may give some explanation to some of his behaviour in later life…). We will take a look at the pitch where young Diego played his first official game, and we will meet Joyo, a youth friend of Diego still living in Villa Fiorito. Also, we will take a look at the house where Diego lived during his youth in Villa Fiorito.

Then we go to Argentinos Juniors, in the neighbourhood of ‘La Paternal’ to their stadium called ‘Diego Armando Maradona’ . Maradona is still the club’s topscorer with 112 goals scored in the 6 seasons he played with Argentinos Juniors before moving to Boca Juniors. You may know that publicly Diego always dwells with Boca Juniors, but fact of the matter is that he only played 2 odd seasons with this team… Argentinos Juniors considers Diego as its greatest player ever, but whether the feeling is mutual is not clear. The club has dedicated a museum to their heroe, and we will visit this during the tour.

Last but not least Boca Juniors in the neighbourhood of La Boca. The team Maradona indentifies himself most with.. yet where he only played two seasons, one before leaving to Europe (to Barcelona) and one after becoming back. In certain matches you will still see him in the stadium, seated in the ‘palco’, the VIP area where he has his own box, having the crowd cheer at him. Obviously, a visit to this theatre of football cannot be skipped on any BA landmark tour of D.A.M. Here, we will take a tour to the stadium and visit the Boca museum with lots of attention for ‘El Diez’.

The whole tour is organized by Casa34. This includes: transport to the different locations, an english speaking guide and tickets for the museums we will visit. Tours will start in September 2008. If you are interested, please contact us via email on info@casa34.com.
